Evolving Doors Dance

Class Description…

Class begins with a centering warm up, exploring weight shift, space, and internal and external consciousness to bring the dancer into a somatically aware state of readiness. Class then offers movement varying from expansive and sweeping to intricate and quirky, technical elements, complexity of floor pattern/direction change/level, inversions, and floor work in each class. Movement is Limon and Release based with a strong technical through-line, utilizes weight of the body, uses the spine and awareness of the head-tail connection throughout, and relies heavily on the use of spirals through the kinesthetic sphere of movement. This class is geared toward the int/adv dancer, those pursuing dance as a profession, and dancers looking for a full-bodied, get-your-blood-pumping, feel-good but also challenged class! Class is frequently accompanied by drummer, Amy Shelley!

What to Expect from an EDD Class...

All classes offered by EDD are currently taught by Angie Simmons. Each class begins with a simple warm up that mixes and melds elements from the Alexander Technique, Pilates-like core awakening movement, yoga stretches and stabilizing movement, and exercises that foster physical awareness and energetic and muscular connection and opposition. This warm up is designed to help dancers find grounding, power, and stability, while also dropping into a focused and ready state for movement. Each class then moves on to center exercises, interweaving traditional training in both parallel and turned out positions with Release-based and non-traditional upper body, as well as some traveling movement. Dancers can expect to experience a portion of class focused on adagio to gain strength, stability, fluidity and control, both standing and on the floor. Each class contains time devoted to traveling across the space by cultivating practices of locomotion, direction changes, weight shifts, and transference of weight into and out of the floor. Dancers can also expect a portion of class devoted to more allegro movement that travels throughout the space and challenging them to change direction, level and movement quality.

Class Intention…

One leg of EDD’s mission is to bring quality dance education to the community via classes, workshops, and opportunities for students and professionals alike. All classes are taught from a solid understanding of the body and it’s kinesthetic abilities, a vocabulary of anatomical clarity combined with the use of imagery and experiential awareness, and the support of Angie’s somatics background and a philosophy that movement is at the core of life. The goal of all classes is to provide solid training and education, in a safe environment, while encouraging dancers to take risks and embrace challenges, as well as discover the joys of moving and developing dance as a practice. Aside from her MFA in Choreography, Angie holds a BS in Secondary Dance Education and has more than 20 years of teaching experience, educating dancers of all abilities and ages. For more about Angie’s background, visit her bio page.

Easily pay for your class card online through our secure paypal account OR through Venmo. Cards cannot be transferred and EDD cannot refund for cards purchased or classes unused. Individual classes or class cards may also be purchased by cash or card.
