Angie Simmons

(Artistic Director / Choreographer / Conceptualist)

is an independent choreographer, dance educator, and the Artistic Director/choreographer/founder of Evolving Doors Dance, a contemporary modern dance company, founded in 2006. The purpose of her work with EDD is to raise social awareness within audiences, striving to bridge gaps in perception between diverse communities of people by focusing on shared experiences and universal humanity. Angie has been awarded Neodata Endowment Project grants, various Boulder Arts Commission grants, a BCAA Neodata Endowment Fellowship Award and a Aurora Arts District Grant for her body of work in Colorado. She has choreographed, taught and performed in New York, Colorado, Minnesota, Illinois, Iowa, Tennessee, Mississippi, and throughout the midwest, currently teaches and creates dance work in the Boulder/Denver area, and was featured in Presenting Denver’s In the Spotlight as a prominent Denver dance artist. Angie also choreographs regularly with Miners Alley Theatre, a professional theatre company located in Golden, Colorado. Recent works with the theatre include Cabaret, A Christmas Carol, Fun Home, and Once.


With twenty years teaching experience, Angie brings a seasoned and somatically in-depth knowledge to the classroom. Her background in the Alexander Technique and training as a body worker give her a unique eye and sensitivity to body imbalance, correction, and muscle release and engagement. Angie currently teaches classes in the Denver metro area and is Adjunct Faculty at Red Rocks and Pikes Peak Community Colleges. Angie spent 2015-16 as Visiting Faculty at the University of Southern Mississippi where she taught studio and lecture courses, and set three original works on student companies. She was dance faculty for modern and choreography classes at Centennial State Ballet for ten years for their academy and Pre-Collegiate Ballet Intensive Program, designed for pre-professional dancing young adults. Additional teaching positions have included studios and schools throughout the Denver metro, as a company instructor for 3rd Law Dance/Theatre, and she has worked with various after school and residency programs locally, in Chicago, and in Minneapolis. Along with Co-Director of EDD, Amy Shelley, Angie taught and set choreography as a resident guest artist in 2012 at Middle Tennessee State University. The duo were also guest artists in 2010 at Iowa State University. Simmons previously founded SoulAxis Dance and Performing Arts Company (which is now RHS Modern Dance Company), a collaborative outlet for Minnesota high school students, in 1998 while she was teacher and director for Rosemount High School’s dance program.


Angie holds an MFA in Dance Choreography from the University of Colorado at Boulder, with an emphasis in the Alexander Technique, and a BS in Secondary Dance Education from Illinois State University. Aside from her performances with Evolving Doors Dance, Simmons has also performed professionally with Isis Movement Company and Tribe of Human in New York and 3rd Law Dance/Theatre and Cindy Brandle Dance Company, Louder Than Words Dancetheatre in Colorado. Angie has also worked on individual projects with Maedée Dupree, Andee Scott, Gabe Masson, Tom Evert, Marcela Alvarez, Jon DeMone, Doug Woods, Kim Neal Knofsinger, David Dorfman, Toby Hankin, Nada Diachenko, Megan Flood, Maruisz Olszewski, Anna Baer, and Lynda White.
